TWO DEFEATS

Last week saw both the first team and second team suffer league defeats. The seconds played Shorts FC II away last Wednesday night and crashed to a 3-2 loss. The seconds got off to a flyer when Brendan Mooney headed home from a Cairns corner with 20 mins gone. However within minutes Shorts scored two quick fire goals to take the lead after Star had switched off for spells of the 1st half. The second half saw an improvement from Star and deservedly got their equalizer when (S) Murray pinpoint cross was met by the Jim McMullan, who was returning to the side after an 18 month layoff due to a horrific injury. Star pushed for the winner but good defending from Shorts and sloppy final ball would cost them as Shorts nicked a winner near the end. A disappointing start from the seconds however the lads will be determined to put that right in the next few weeks with improved performances and hopefully a few wins.

The firsts had another tough away fixture to Newington Rangers. With no fewer than 6 key first team players missing through either suspension, injury or attending weddings this was to be a difficult match as Newington had beaten Star 2-1 and given them 2 other tough games last season. Star had a 2 goal lead, through Paul Brown and Mc Caff, going into the last 15 mins and looking very comfortable. However Newington scored 3 quick goals and took all 3 points. Once again a 2 goal lead squandered and points dropped manager Eamonn Hawkins will be disappointed with just 1 point to show from 2 winning positions. However with players becoming available within the next few weeks results should hopefully improve.
