NEWINGTON 0 - 1 CRUMLIN STAR Star progessed to the semi final of the Clarence cup with a hard fought win away to Premier divison opposition Newington. Newington pressed early on however the first chance fell to McKervey who had his shot well saved by the keeper. Newington had Star on the backfoot but the defence of Neilis, O reilly, Keenan and Mc Connell stood firm and defended very well limiting Newington to a few half chances. O Dwyer in goal was also having a good game as he made a few crucial saves to deny Newington close range chances. The Star's midfield of Clark, Reid, Mooney and Mc Kervey were working tireless and Star's front two of Devenny and Brown were always a constant threat and worked the newington backline to the limit. H/T 0-0 Star started the second half in a determined mood after a stern team talk from manager Hawkins and again pushed Newington to the limit. The game turned into a real midfield battle, with reid and Mooney working very well together and getting on top their opposition. Clarke and McKervey linked well with Brown and Devenney up front and Mooney had a close range chance easily saved by the keeper. Newington pushed harder for the opener but the Star defence with McConnell in particular good form were denying there every opportunity. The Star opener came from a through ball from Reid and his pass found the wonderful left foot of McKervey whos strike left the newington keeper stranded with no chance. Star then introduced McNally for Mckervey and Hamilton for Mooney as newington pushed hard but to no avail. Star quickly broke away with Devenney but his pass to Brown was claimed by the opposition keeper, as Murphy was introduced for Clarke. The referees long 8 minutes stoppage time was dealth with by the Star defence and as the final whistle went both the star team and their numerous supporters were delighted. Manager Hawkins and his assistant Brown were delighted with the teams effort and commitment and stated the only thing left is for them to go on and win it!!!!
