CRUMLIN STAR 2 - 0 BALLYWALTER REC On Tuesday night, Crumlin Star won their first trophy of the season when they defeated Ballywalter Rec 2-0 to win the Cochrane & Corry Cup. With manager Eamonn Hawkins unable to attend it was left to assistant manager Saucy to take charge of the team with the help of Club secretary Mezza. Ballywalter started the game the brighter and posed the Sta's defence of Mc Connell, Keenan, O' Reilly and Neilis a few problems in the first 20 minutes. Star finally got to grips with the game and created their first chance when Mc Kervey and Reid worked the ball down the left channel and Mc Kervey played in Neilis whos left foot shot just went over the bar. Star's midfield of Braniff, Reid, Clarke and Mc Kervey were dominating and creating chances for the front two with their excellent passing. Paul Brown then went closest to breaking the deadlock when he beat 3 Ballywalter players only to hit his shot straight at the keeper from 18 yards. Star's front two, Brown and Devenny, were a constant threat with Devenny hold up play being excellent and Brown's pace causing problems. The deadlock was broken when on 32 minutes Mc Kervey whipped in a dangerous ball from the left which went over the keeper's head and into the net. Star, now firmly in control of the match, pressed for a second before half time with a skillful Clarke volley nearing doubling Star's advantage only the keeper made a good save and Keenan hitting the crossbar from a corner.
H/T 1-0 Star came flying out of the blocks at the start of the second half with Mc Kervey and Brown just putting chances wide. Star's second goal did arrive when another excellent Mc Kervey corner was flicked on by Brown and Devenny finished from close range to give Star a 2 goal advantage. Star were now playing some brilliant passing football in midfield and created chance after chance and should have went further ahead when Brown went round the keeper only to stumble at the vital moment. Star made a few changes with Doran, Mc Nally and Hamiliton replacing Devenny Clarke and Mc Connell. Ballywalter had a great chance to reduce the deficit when their forward hit a great free kick that O' Dwyre saved from the top corner and then made another terrific save low to his right from the rebound. Braniff also had a great chance to seal victory when he went clear however his shot was saved by the keeper. The final whistle went and Star had won their first trophy of the season and hopefully not their last trophy of the season. Both teams had played the game in good spirit and credit must also go to Ballywalter who were very gracious in defeat with Star also applauding their oppenents.
