                   ST LUKES 1 - 5 CRUMLIN STAR

Crumlin Star travelled to Twinbrook on Saturday to play Belfast & District premier league side St Lukes in the last 32 of the Junior cup. Star ran out convincing winners 5-1 with goals from Devenny, Barry McKervey (2) and two wonder strikes from Anto Braniff put the Star through to the last 16. The Star started of like a house on fire and were 1-0 up with in the first few minutes when a great cross from Ciaran Reid found Devenny and the big striker made no mistake with the finish to give the Star the lead. Soon after it was 2-0, the ball broke to Braniff out on the wing and he found McKervey with a pin point cross and the inform midfielder found the back of the net with a sweet left foot strike. St Lukes were on the ropes at this point but they pull a goal back against the run of play midway through the first half when slack defending from a free kick saw the smallest player on the park get a free header to half the deficit and bring St Lukes back into the game. Star responded well and had chances to go further ahead but misses from Brown and McKervey proved not to be too costly. It was the 27th of October when Anto Braniff last scored for the Star and the big midfielder made the wait worth while with a contender for goal of the season, Paul Brown found space out wide and he squared the ball to Braniff who let fly with a 30 yard volley into the top corner to give the star a 3-1 lead going into half time.
H/T 1-3
The second half was again dominated by the Star as they created the better chances and had most of the possession, and it wasn't long before the game was finally killed of from another wonder strike from Anto Braniff. This time the Star captain struck another 30 yard volley with his left foot into the corner of the net leaving the St Lukes keeper with no chance. Whenever St Lukes did try to attack the Stars defence was more than a match, with Brendan Mooney in particular having a fine game at centre back. Barry McKervey made it 5-1 near the end with a delight-full chip to give the Star an emphatic win up in Twinbrook.
Next week the Star entertain Tummery Athletic in the last 16 of the Junior cup at Mallusk, K.O 1:30 pm.
