Crumlin Star II 1-0 Orangfield Old Boys II

Crumlin Star seconds took on Orangefield at solitude on Friday night in junior shield. The Ardoyne side had the first oppertunity of the game on ten mins when Stiofan Brown  was found by Dominic Whelan on the wing and from his cross Ciaran Cairns  header just shaved the bar. The East Belfast side started to come into the game shortly after and on 20mins should have took the lead when Mc Connell lost the ball in midfield and from a great piece of play from the Orangefield midfielder and forward as they combined well to set the latter fre on goal but Ciaran McNeill pulled of a great save to deny the East Belfast men. Orangfield were winning most of the battles in midfield as the same to players almost broke the deadlock for Orangefield again but again their striker was denied by the excellent Mc Neill in goal. Midway through the half the Star were unlucky not to take the lead when James Doyle's cross was met by Ciaran Braniff on the volley which brought out a super save by Orangefield keeper. Stiofan Brown and Whelan were giving the Orangemen a hard time on the wings with Browns great run and strike from 30yards was saved again by the keeper. On the stroke of half time the Orangemen were denied again  when a long ball caught the Star's defence square but Ciaran mc Neill was on hand again to stop a certin goal.

Towzer's and Joe mc Alea's team talk at halftime inspired the Ardoyne side as from the start of the second half  the Star put the Orangemen under a period of sustained pressure and almost took the lead when Osborne and Mc Connell linked beautifully as they found Brown on the wing when his cross was superbly met by the oncoming Braniff but his effort somehow crashed agonisingly of the post.
On 60 mins the Star borke the deadlock when Jim Hagans found Doyle on the wing whos cross was met by Cairns who unselfishly tapped the ball to carian braniff who drilled the ball pass the keeper to put the star in front. Stiofan Brown was making great runs from defence and almost got a second minutes later after beating three Orangefield players with ease he let fly from 20 yards only to be denied by the keeper. Foster, Mc Guinness and dom Murray came on towards the end of the game to give the Star that little bit of energy that they needed to see the game out as the Star booked their place in the 4th round of the Shield. It just goes to show how strong the club is at the moment as the seconds keep holding their own in one of junior footballs most prestigious prizes.

Stars next game against Dunmurray Rec at mallusk 2pm kick off.
Ciaran McNeill was again in surpurb form on Friday night.
