Crumlin Star 4-0 Iveagh United The Star started of with a win in their new surroundings after defeating West Belfast rivals Iveagh United at a rain soaked Solitude. With most teams in the country playing in flooded pitches both sides where great full to be playing on Cliftonville's new 3G surface which easily coped with Saturday's heavy rain. The first half hour was pretty even with both side not giving much away but when Mark Mooney ghosted past two defenders out on the wing and cut in to the box but he seemed to lose his footing at the last moment and to the despair of the Iveagh players the referee awarded a penalty. Up stepped the reliable Sean Brown to send the keeper the wrong way to give the Star the lead. It was the breakthrough the Star needed as the players seemed to be getting on top at that stage. Just before the break the Star scored probably one of the goals of the season when Sean Brown turned his marker and played a series of one two's with Joe Gormley which cut open Iveagh's defence easily and Gormley fired the Star to a 2-0 lead. It was a goal from the highest order which was like Lionel Messi's against Panathinaikos last week in the Champions league.
The second half was as it was in the first with Iveagh competing well but without that creativeness in front of the Star goal as Thompson had little to do all game. Anto Braniff came close to scoring his first of the season when Reid picked him out at the edge of the box from a pin point corner but his effort was tipped over the bar by the Iveagh keeper. Form the resulting corner Joe Gormley let fly from all of 25 yards but his effort agonisingly crashed of the underside of the bar. Gormley did make it 3-0 in the 70th minute when Staiofan Brown crossed for the big striker to tap in his 17th goal of the season. Paul Brown came on after a two game ban and got on the scoring act too when he capitalised on a defencive mistake from Iveagh's McNulty to fire the ball past the helpless keeper to make it 4-0 to the Star. Next week the Star are away to Groomsport in a league fixture, kick off 2:00pm.
