Firsts reach final of the Junior Shield

                                                             Crumlin Star 2-0 Ford

The Star reached the final of the Junior Shield last Tuesday night after beating Ford 2-0 at the Junior Stadium. The Star opened the scoring as early as the 5th minute when Joe McAlea scored his first goal for the club after Seamy Nellis drove the ball across the goal line for McAlea to tap the ball home to give the Star an excellent start to the game. After this the Star failed to capitalise on their great start as they seemed to take their foot of the gas. Ford lifted their game midway through the half and started to create a few chances of their own but never really troubled young McNeill in goal.
H/T 1-0

The second half was of the same pattern as Ford where the more hungrier of the sides and the Star being far from their best but again Ford failed to even hit the target with any of the half chances they created. As the game wore on and Ford pushing for the equaliser the Star started to look dangerous on the break with Paul Brown & Chris Devenny eager to give the Ardoyne side the cushion of a second goal. In the 70th minute Nial Hawkins broke down the right flank and found the unmarked Devenny in the middle for the big striker to slot the ball home to send the big support into raptures.

On Saturday a much changed Star side took on Newington Rangers in the Clarence Cup at Mallusk. Manager Hawkins made no fewer than six changes from the side that beat Ford in midweek with the likes of the Brown brothers, Braniff, Nellis, McAlea, O'Reilly and Thompson all being rested for the big games that will be coming up thick and fast. With the Star trailing 2-1 with a few minutes left young Joe Gormley crashed a header of the bar from a few yards out when he should've scored, from the break away Newington went up the pitch and made it 3-1 to put the Star out of the Clarence Cup.
