Star seconds opened up their league campaign with a narrow 1-0 defeat to UUJ II at Mallusk. The seconds squad came into the game abit depleted with first team call ups and players not being able to make the match. UUJ started the better side and had Star on the backfoot for the first 10 minutes without really causing any problems. Star gradually got into the match with veteran Toner getting on the ball more and bringing the midfield into play. The match was a midfield battle with both teams not playing much good football. The first chance fell to UUJ however their midfielder put his effort high and wide. Toner then beat 2 defenders howver his effort went wide of the goal. Star's defence of Murray, Collins, Mallon and Lizard were playing very well and dealing with any UUJ attacks comfortably and boths sides went into the break on level terms after a poor first half. Star's midfield of Hagans, Mc Mullan, Gormley and O Halloran were working tireless and trying to set up attacks. No real chances were created by both sides until the last 10 mins when the UUJ striker finished superbly into the top corner, despite appearing to handle the ball first, to give Mc Neill no chance. Star pushed for an equaliser and Toner had a perfectly good goal ruled out and also had an effort go over the bar and It was not to be Star's day. Star's management duo of Hagans and Toner were pleased with the backline and commitment of the players but were disappointed with the quality of football played at time especially in attack.
