18th Newtownabbey OB II 1 - 5 Crumlin Star II

Star II got a much needed win on Saturday against 18th Newtownabbey at Monkstown. Star started the match well with Mc Nally shooting just wide from 20 yards. A one two up the right hand side between Mc Connall and (M)Mooney saw the latter get in behind the 18th defence, he squared the ball to Toner who scuffed his shot wide. The Star's defence of Mallon, (B) Mooney, Mc Alea and Hagans had to be alert to 18th's quick counters and Mc Gibben in nets was rarely troubled. Star did take the lead when Mc Nally closed down the goalkeeper and won the ball and he was left with a simple tap in to put Star in front. However within a few minutes 18th were level when there midfielder scored a 30 yard free kick that somehow went past Mc Gibben in goal. Despite this setback Star put pressure on 18th and Mc Kervey curled a superb 25 yard shot that unluckily hit the bar. Juts before half time Star regained the lead when Mc Nally scored a long range half volley into the top corner. H/T 1-2 

The second half started again with Star having most of the possession. (M) Mooney and Gormley were winning the midfield battle with Mc Connall and Mc Kervey supplying the front duo from each wing. Mc Nally had a great opportunity to get his hat trick however he shot wide from 6 yards. Hamilton replaced Toner on 60 minutes and it was Hamilton who got Star's third goal when he blasted his shot into the roof of the net after a clever run. Star got another goal when Mc Kervey cooly slotted past the goalkeeper from 14 yards to make it 4-1. Mc Mullan and Doyle replaced Mc Connall and Mc Nally and just before the final whistle Doyle got on the scoresheet when he tapped in Mc Kervey's cross. F/T 1-5
