Santos 1-5 Crumlin StarCrumlin Star travelled to Blanchflower park on Saturday to face 2B outfit Santos in the Cochrane & Corry cup. Star started the brighter between the sides with Braniff and Reid trying their luck from long range but where denied by the Santos keeper. After a cross from Brown into the Santos box there was a horrible collision of heads between the Santos keeper and Seamy Nellis, both players needed urgent treatment with blood coming from both of them with the match being stopped for 15 minutes. Devenny replaced Nellis and went straight into the heart of the action nodding home from a Paul Brown cross to give the Star a 1-0 lead. The Star had chances to add to their tally before the halftime whistle but where waste-full in front of goal whilst Santos offered very little upfront. H/T 0-1 After a stern talking to from manager Hawkins the Star players upped their game and from a long throw from Braniff big Devenny rose highest to double the Stars lead. Soon after it was 3-0 when Braniff swung in a pin-point cross for Paul Brown to head home from close range. McConnell replaced Sean Brown in midfield to give the Star some fresh legs and by this stage the Star where creating chances at will. The goal of the game came with 20 minutes to go, from a Thompson goal kick Braniff chested to ball back to Cairns who fed the ball to Brown up the line, Brown then played a one-two with Braniff and squared it to Ciaran Reid who found the top corner with a 25 yard screamer. Paul Brown then made it 5-0 with a close range finish to put the game well beyond Santos. In fairness the Antrim Road men never gave up and where rewarded with their efforts when their striker bundled the ball over the Star line to give the home support something to cheer about. Next week the Star are home to Albion Star in a league fixture K.O 2.00pm. The Crumlin Star football committee would like wish the Santos keeper a speedy recovery and we hope the keeper returns to full fitness as soon as possible.
