18th Newtonabby Old Boys 3-4 Crumlin StarThe Star travelled to Monkstown on Saturday for a top of the table clash with early pace setters 18th Newtonabby Old Boys. Fresh from their 4-1 win last week the Star where eager to leave with all 3pts and mount a serious title challenge. It didn't take long for the Star to open the scoring when inform striker Paul Brown nodded home from a Barry McKervey corner. 18th responded well and from a corner of their own Sean O'Reilly failed to clear his lines properly and an 18th player volleyed home from the edge of the box. The Star welcomed back Anto Braniff, Mark Mooney and Barry McKervey into the starting eleven after suspensions and injuries and McKervey wasted no time in getting on the score sheet when put thriugh by Paul Brown he delightfully chipped the keeper from 25 yards. Both teams had chances to add to their tally but a combination of poor finishing and fine defending kept the score line the same. H/T 1-2 The Star went further ahead right at the start of the second half when good work from O'Reilly and Mooney seen the little winger round the keeper to square the ball to Paul Brown for the striker's second of the day to put the Star 3-1 up. The Game should have been put beyond the home side but Devenny and Brown both missed guilt edge chances when put through one on one with the 18th keeper. This was to cost the Star dearly as 18th pulled a goal back from a close range effort leaving Thompson in goal with no chance. With ten minute to go the teams where level again when Braniff was beaten to the ball by the home striker who's shot was going well wide of the goal only for it to take a wicket deflection of Seamy Nellis for an own goal. But in the last minute Braniff redeemed himself when he rose highest from a McKervey corner to nod the ball back to Keenan who's effort was headed in on the line by Paul Brown for the strikers second hat-trick in two weeks and his 16th goal in 7 games. The Star held on for the win after some late pressure from the home side to keep the Ardoyne men firmly in the title race. Top performers on the day where Paul Brown and Ciaran McCoey who was solid as a rock in the right back position. Next week the star are at home to Derriaghy C.C with a 2.00pm kick off.
