Gary Robinson, of Valley Driving School, presents Davy McQuigg, Fivemiletown United manager, with a match ball before Saturday’s home game against Crumlin Star in the Intermediate Cup, which they lost 6-2.
Fivemiletown Utd 2, Crumlin Star 6. FIVEMILETOWN United hosted Amateur League 1B side, Crumlin Star, in the first round of the Intermediate Cup on Saturday. The visiting team arrived with a formidable reputation and at the end of 90 minutes proved that that tag was not without merit.
The young Town charges battled hard throughout but could not match the slick movement of the visitors.
Star were 3-1 up at the break. An Ivor Johnston flick-on from a corner was turned into the Star goal by a defender and gave the Town a glimmer of hope going into the changing room.
Any slight hopes the Town had of turning the tide was quickly extinguished when Star added two quick goals at the start of the second period. Stevie Erskine, from the spot, added a second for the Town. Star added a sixth with 30 minutes remaing.
Although Star were the superior team on the day, the Town were not without chances. The Star netminder was forced into action on several occasions.
Overall, the young Town team are probably 18 months away in their development from successfully competeting at this level. Every game is a learning curve and against Star the lesson learned should be movement off the ball is as vital as what you do with the ball while in possession.
