Iveagh United 1-8 Crumlin StarThe Star produced an excellent display of quality football & deadly finishing as they swept aside West Belfast outfit Iveagh United at Richardson Park on Saturday. After last weeks below power performance Eamonn Hawkins had his troops well fired up for this one as he gave his players a stern talking to before the game which no doubt worked as the Star started like a house on fire, putting the home side's defence under some intense pressure early on. After a couple of penalty claims turned away & some half chances going astray the Star finally got their just rewards in the 10th minute when Sean O'Reilly broke down the left flank and crossed for Ciaran Reid to fire home at the back post. A scrappy ten minute spell soon after let the home side draw level when Iveagh's right midfielder found space at the edge of the box and curled a delightful effort into the top corner. The home side's resurgence was short lived though, as straight from the kick off Joe Gormley danced round three players and played a neat one two with Sean Brown for Gormley to poke the ball past the oncoming keeper and put the Star straight back into the lead. This time there would be no way back for Iveagh as the Star started to play some cracking football and created chances at will. Sean Brown got on the scoring act when Reid & McDowell worked well together down the line for the latter to cross the ball into the path of Brown who made no mistake with his finish to make it 3-1 to the Star. Just before the break Gormley put the game well beyond Iveagh when a Braniff through ball sent the big striker clear on goal and to everyone's surprise Gormley brilliantly lifted the ball over the stranded keeper and into the back of the net from the most acute angle. H/T 1-4 It was as you were in the second half as the Star started of well on top again and in the 47th minute McDowell somehow found space out in the right and crossed for Brown to score from close range as the league leaders began to flex their muscles. Iveagh's troubles went from bad to worse when O'Reilly got to a through ball before the home side's keeper but as he cut in towards goal the big keeper cut him down just outside the box with a horrible tackle and was shown a straight red card. Mooney, Taylor & Nellis all came on for the last quarter and got straight into the action as Mooney set up Paul Berne to score his first goal for the star. Mooney had a hand in the Star's 7th goal too when he raced clear on goal and unselfishly squared the ball to Gormley who had the easiest finish to make it 7-1. Gormley then got his 4th of the day when the ball broke to him in the box and the inform striker crashed the ball home to score his 32nd goal of the season. Next week the Star are away to Dromara Village in the quarter final of the Border Cup, Kick Off 1:30pm. Paul Berne scored his first goal for the Star on Saturday |

Crumlin Star 3-1 Dromore AmateursOn Saturday the Star faced 1C strugglers Dromore Amateurs at solitude in which the Ardoyne side were fancied to score a hat full of goals but football is a funny old game and the team third from bottom pushed the Star all the way for the full 90 minutes. After some excellent results lately the Star had no game last week which must have disrupted their form as they struggled to make many clear cut chances in the opening half hour of the game. At times the Ardoyne side passed the ball about well but when they got into Dromore's final third the Star where missing the essential final ball. To make matters worse the Star lost Mark Mooney with a hip injury midway through the half but his replacement in Domnic Whelan was like for like as he gave his maker lots to think about with his silky skills. In the 35th minute Anto Braniff thought he's broken the dead lock from a Ciaran Reid corner but he was judged to have pushed his opponent as the referee ruled out his fine header. Minutes later Braniff did open the scoring when O'Reilly delivered a pin point cross on to Braniff's head and the midfielder looped his header over the keeper to make it 1-0 to the Star. H/T 1-0 After a stern talking to from the management team at half time the Star were sent out to up their game and be more direct at goal but this must have fallen on deaf ears as another lack luster start gifted Dromore an equaliser when Nellis was caught in possession which enabled the away side to break up the pitch and fire the ball past the defenceless Thompson in goal. The rest of the game was to be played in Dromre's final third as the Star pushed to regain the lead but in fairness very rarely forced the Dromore's number one in to many saves. In the 77th minute McAlea broke down the left flank and fired in a dangerous cross which was only half cleared to Braniff who blasted an unstoppable effort into the top corner from all of 30 yards as the Star finally got the breakthrough they craved. The points were safely in the bag in the 87th minute when McNally was upended in the box and Gormley stepped up to send the keeper the wrong way to make it 3-1 to the Star. Although the Star didn't play well it was the 3 points that mattered in the end and with some excellent performances from Berne, O'Reilly & McNally there was still some good points to take from the game. Next week the Star are away to Iveagh United in a league fixture, kick off 2:00pm. Anto Braniff scored an unstoppable 30 yarded into the top corner. |

CRUMLIN STAR II 7 - 2 DUNMURRY REC II Star II's recorded an emphatic 7-2 win against Dunmurry Rec II at Mallusk on Saturday. Star played some excellent football throught the game with the only sour point was the strong wind that ruined the game at times. Star started the game sluggish and rightfully fell behind when the Rec's nippy left winger crossed for their centre forward to volley past Toner in nets. This was a wake up call for Star and they equalised soon after when Mc Nally rounded the keeper for a tap in. Mc Nally put Star infront when he shrugged off the challange of the Rec centre back to cooly slot past the oncoming keeper. D Murray and Reilly should have put Star further infront but they fluffed their chances. Star were well in control of the match with Gormley and Mc Connell dominating the midfield. However Star would go into the break just 1 goal up. Star got off to the perfect start to the second half when Mc Nally vollyed home with the outside of his foot from 25 yards to get his hat trick. Brown and O'Neill combined well down the left and Brown won a penalty and he stepped up to score after sending the kepper the wrong way. Mc Nally got his fourth of the day when Braniff crossed for him to score from 6 yards. C.Braniiff got on the score sheet himself when he outpaced the Rec backline and blasted the ball into the bottom corner. Mc Mullan made it seven when he headed home a Braniff corner from close range. Dunmurry got a late consolation. Starman: Mc Nally Star II: Toner, Reilly, Mc Mullan, Hamilton, O'Neill, D Murray, Brown, Gormley(C), Mc Connall, Mc Nally, C Braniff, Osborne, Prenter, Mc Kinney James Mc Nally scored 4 goals on Saturday. 7goals in 5 games |
