Crumlin star 3 - 1 Downpatrick

Walter Moore Cup

Crumlin Star took on County Down Downpatrick team at Solitude. The game was one of only a few that took place due to the cold weather although the Ardoyne side were well warmed up for the game and took it straight to the County Down team. Gerard Mc Connell was controlling the midfeild from the start and his quick passing found osborne in the box and the Star midfielder was unlucky not to score as the Downpatrick keeper was out quicky to narrow his angle and the keeper made him shoot wide. James Mc Nally and James Doyle were causing the Downpatrick team all sorts of problems with there fast pace and quick passing and Doyle was all most on the score sheet, when from a corner Doyle won a header at the back post but the Downpatrick keeper was equal to it. The County Down side were very quick on the break and Gormley, Mullan, Reilly and Mc Kinney had to be on their toes as time an time again the County Down team were breaking with pace. On 30mins the County Down team took the lead when some sloppy passing from the Star was captilised by the downpatrick midfield and there tricky winger beat the star defenders with great skill and crossed to the back post giving Ciaran Largey no chance in goals. The Star were missing some great chances to get on level terms with O Reilly, Hawkins and Doyle missing the target. The Saints almost scored a second when Mc Connell and Mullan were caught out but Jimmy Mullan repreived himself with a great tackle to stop the saints striker from scoring. HT 0-1
The Crumlin Star management of Toner and Hamilton give the players some harsh words at half time and right from the start of the 2nd half the Ardoyne team were searching for the equaliser and on 50mins James Doyle scored a stunning goal from 25yards curling the ball with pace into the top corner. Ciaran Braniff was introduced to the front line and was winning battles with the two Downpatrick center halfs and linking well with Osborne. The two players linked well and Kevin Osborne unleased a left foot shot from 30 yards which was heading for the top corner but the saints keeper brought of a cracking save to deny Osborne. The Star keeper Largey got injured so the Star management has to shuffle with Ciaran Gormley went into goals and O'Reilly went into defence with Mc Grandles entering the fray. The Ardoyne team were well on top and on 75min they took the lead when McConnell found McNally with a precision pass and the Star front man made no mistake curling the ball pass the advancing keeper to put the ardoyne team infront. Joe Todd came on just after the goal was scored and wtih his first touch he almost scored only the saints keeper was out quickly to deny him on 83 mins. The Star went further when Braniff put a ball over the top for todd who outpaced the saints defence and was tackled from behind and brought down in the box an the ref give a pentaly. James Doyle converted the spot kick. Joe Todd almost made it four only to be fouled in the box only no pentaly this time. final score. Crumlin star 3 Downpatrick 1

Kilroot Rec 1-4 Crumlin Star

After a four week lay off due to the big freeze the Star were glad to get back to some league football and they don't come much harder than Kilroot away who were sitting in second place behind the Star in the league.  In very wintery conditions both sides struggled to play much football but it was the Star who always looked the more likely to score and that they did when Paul Brown opened the scoring in the 15th minute with a tidy finish.  That's as good as it got in the opening 45 minutes as it was clear the long lay off was effecting both sets of players.

The second period was a lot more exciting than the first with four more goals and a sending off as the game started to open up.  Kilroot equalised shortly after the interval when a long ball into the box was headed home by their striker. The Star's response was immediate as Gormley broke free on goal but was hauled down inside the box for a stone wall penalty and a straight red for the Kilroot defender. Gormley dusted himself down and stepped up to send the keeper the wrong way to put the Ardoyne side back into the lead.  Ciaran Reid the made it 3-1 with a bit of help from lady luck when his in-swinging cross came of the back post and in of the helpless keeper.  Gormley then put the icing on the cake for the league leaders when he jinked his way into the box and fired an unstoppable shot into the bottom corner to make it a resounding victory for the Star.

CRUMLIN STAR II 4 - 3 RATHFERN RANGERS II

Crumllin Star 2nds took on Rathfern Rangers at Solitude and it was the star who were well in control in the early stages. With Mc Connell and Brown and Taylor causing the gers all sorts of problems, on 25 mins the star should have took the lead when Tony Reilly made a run from defence straight into the gers box and his cross was inch prefect for Mc Nally who shot wide from 2 yards out. Mc Connell was controlling the midfield and with a inch perfect pass he found Paul Mc Clean who beat the offside trap and was one on one with keeper but the gers keeper pulled of a great save to keep the scores level at ht.0-0

The 2nd half was started the better by the gers and they took the lead on 60mins when good running from there midfielder created an opening and he hit a unstoppable shot to give O'Dwyer no chance in goals. Star manager Larry Toner made changes, bringing on Doyle and O'Reilly and from Doyles first touch his header hit the cross bar. Osborne and O'Reilly were in great form and Osborne found Taylor on the wing and his cross was met by James Doyle who slotted the ball in to the net to level the scores. Devenney was causing the gers defence problems with his strength and his pass found Mc Nally who found Doyle who drilled his shot passed the keeper for his 2nd goal. The Star were well in control but the gers bounched back beating the Stars' offside trap and a cross from the winger gave the gers' forward an easy tap in to level the scores. Devenenny was replaced by D Murray and Murray should have put the star infront again only to see the gers keeper tip his effort over the bar. On 80 mins the Star scored the goal of the game when from defence Finnegan, Taylor and Mc Connell found the in form Kevin Osborne who unleashed an unstoppable shot from 20yards  to put the Star infront again. Only two mins after the Star scored the gers pushed hard and from a corner they equalised when unmarked the center half powered his header passed O'Dwyer in goal. The game looked like it was heading for a draw until James Doyle chased a nothing ball and shugged of a defender and raced towards goal and cooly tucked his shot pass the keeper to win the game for the Ardoyne team and complete his hattrick.
