Mossley YM 1-4 Crumlin Star

The Star faced a very tough game away to Mossley on Saturday. It was a game which the management team singled out that would be a massive stepping stone in the Stars quest for the title and the players didn't let them down.
The first half was a pretty even encounter with both sides not giving much away but it was the Star who opened the scoring through Ciaran Reid in the 15th minute. From a free kick out by the touchline Sean Brown & Reid worked a smart move which caught the home side napping and it was the latter who cut in on goal and fired an unstoppable shot into the top corner.
The home side responded well and put the Star under some pressure which eventually paid of when their captain turned Seamy Nellis at the edge if the box and with the aid of a slight deflection of Nellis's boot the ball shot right into the bottom corner of Thompsons net.
It was now up to the Star to raise their game and that they did as Gormely started to give their defence all sorts of problems with his skill and pace. In fact it was Gormley who carved out the best opportunity of the half when he easily beat his marker in the box and pulled it back to Nellis but unfortunately his shot went well over the bar when it looked easier to score.

H/T 1-1

After a stern talking to at half time the Star players went out determined to get the three valuable points and within ten minutes of the restart found themselves 3-1 up to the good. The Ardoyne side took the lead when the impressive McAlea crossed for Gormley to make it 2-1 with a close range finish and then Gormley turned provider when he left three defenders in his wake and cut the ball back to his strike partner Paul Brown for an easy tap in.
This knocked the heart out of the home side as they new it was nearly an impossible task of getting through the Stars stubborn defence with Berne & Burns connecting brilliantly in the middle.
The final goal of the game was created by a piece of brilliance from Paul Brown when he flicked the ball up for himself to attempt an over head kick but after the Mossley keeper made a fine save he hauled down Gormley for a certain penalty. Gormley then stepped up to send the keeper the wrong way to make it an emphatic 4-1 win for the league leaders.

Next week the Star will play 18th Newtonabby at Solitude in a league fixture.

Civil Service 2-4 Crumlin Star

The Star faced third from bottom Civil Service over in East Belfast last week in a sun soaked Houston Park.

The league leaders went 1-0 up early on when Gormley was upended in the box and the reliable Sean Brown stepped up to send the keeper the wrong way to open the scoring.

Soon enough it was 2-0 when Gormley found space in the area and fired a low shot past the home sides number one. It was the Stars 100th goal In the league this season and it was only fitting that prolific striker Gormley scored it.

Midway through the half Gormley got his second and the Stars third of the day when he finished well from a Reid corner.

The Star seemed to stop after the third goal, as their passing got very lacklustre which resulted in the home side grabbing a goal back just before the break after a tidy finish from their centre forward.

H/T 1-3

The sloppiness crept into the Stars game once again at the beginning of the second period and to the Stars dismay Civil pulled another goal back when their winger broke the offside trap to raced through and put the ball between the legs of Largey and into the net.

The Ardoyne men then got their act together and played some nice football with Gormley always at the heart of the action.

In the 75th minute Gormley did put the game to bed when Braniff put him through on goal and with a delicate chip he lifted the ball over the oncoming keeper and into the empty net.

Crumlin Star 4-0 Newington Rangers

On Friday night at Solitude the Star faced Newington Rangers from Larne in a league encounter.
With Newington being the only team in the NAFL still to lose a game the Star players new they had to be at the top of their game if the wanted to keep their 100% win record at Solitude intact.
The early stages of the game was an even affair with both sides not giving much away but after ten minutes on the clock the Star where forced into an early substitution when Nial Hawkins was badly hurt after he kicked the studs of an opposing player and had to be replaced by Sean Brown.
Brown got straight into the thick of the action when he curled an amazing free kick from way out by the touch line which curled over the keeper and into the top corner to give the Star an emphatic early lead.
Straight from the restart Brown won possession and set Gormley free down the line who's fine cross was met by Paul Brown to double the Stars advantage almost immediately after going 1-0 up.
The Stars tails where up at this stage as they created a series of glorious chances to put the game to bed but found the Rangers keeper in fine form, with his best save coming from a pin point shot from six yards that looked to be heading into the top corner.
H/T 2-0
The third goal of the game was always going to be the most important and it duly arrived in the 50th minute from the prolific Gormley when he skinned his marker in the box and unleashed an unstoppable shot into the bottom corner.
Newington then went for broke as the pushed four men up top and went man for man at the back but the Stars back line where in fine form with Burns and Berne having outstanding games in the middle.
In the 72nd minute Braniff flicked a Thompson goal kick into the path of Gormley who's cross was met by the unmarked Paul Brown at the back post for a simple tap in to put the Star 4-0 up to the good.
Gormley then had the chance late on to make it five when he raced through on goal but his cheeky dink over the sprawling keeper went agonisingly wide.
Next week the Star are away to Civil Service for a league fixture, kick off 2:00pm

CRUMLIN STAR II 4 - 1 Albert Foundry II

Star II progressed to the Quarter Finals of the Walter Moore Cup with a hard fought win over Albert Foundry at Mallusk on Saturday. Star were able to welcome back Whelan, Mooney and Mc Connell back into the side. Both teams in the early stages were trying to exert their dominance however with 5 minutes gone, Foundry found themselves a man down when their player was sent off for a horrendous tackle on Reilly. This spurred Star on and moments later Stiofon Brown's mazy run down the right created space for himself in the box and he blasted the ball through the keepers legs to put star one up. Mark Mooney then spurned a great chance to put Star two up when his chip over the keeper just went agonisingly wide. Albert Foundry were still a threat though however Star's defence of Reilly, O'Neill, Finegan and O'Reilly were well on top and limited Foundry's chances. James Doyle linked up well with Mooney but his eventual shot hit the side netting. Star's McConnell and Osborne were at their competitive best in centre midfield and played some nice passes as Star pushed for a second with Dam Whelan shooting narrowly over the bar.

H/T 1-0

Star's management urged their side to push on in the second half to get that second important goal. Star's front duo of Doyle and Mooney were causing all sorts of problems with Doyle having a goal ruled out for offside and Mooney's pace being a great outlet. Gormley replaced Osborne to add some fresh legs and strength to the midfield and 15 minutes into the half Conor Finegan finished calmly low into the net from a corner to give Star that added cushion. Foundry were then reduced to nine men as they imploded and Cairns and Todd were introduced for Doyle and Brown. Star continued to play some excellent football as a nice move between McConnell and Whelan saw the latter cross for Todd to hit the post. Foundry reduced the deficit from the spot and could have been on level terms twice in 2 minutes however Mal Thompson in goal pulled off to excellent saves to deny them. As Foundry pushed late, Star caught them on the break when Todd excellently found Gormley as he rolled the ball into the empty net as the keeper was up in the Star's box for a corner. Todd then made it four when he got on the end of a Cairns superb through ball and he chipped over the keeper as Star ended the game worthy winners.

F/T 4-1
