Crumlin star 4-0 18th Newtonabby OB
The Star moved within one win of the league title after they disposed of a well organised 18th side at Solitude. After the Star ran out 9-0 winners in the previous league encounter between the sides 18th set out with a very defensive formation to try and frustrate the Star. For the opening twenty minutes they did manage to do that as the Star struggled to break down their two lines of defence but when McAleas pin point through ball fell perfectly to Sean Brown at the edge of the box he unleashed a dipping volley from the highest order that flew over the keeper and into the back if the net. That was the breakthrough the home side craved which meant 18th would have to come out and search for an equaliser. Midway through the half the Star scored a deserved second goal which again oozed with quality. The move started of with a long diagonal ball that found Gormley out wide, after beating his marker he squared the ball to Paul Brown who cleverly let the ball run through his legs for the oncoming Ciaran Reid to fire an unstoppable shot that went in of the post from twenty yards out. H/T 2-0
The second half was the same as the first with the Star keeping the ball for long periods as they probed for openings in the 18th defence. Ciaran Reid then got his second and the Stars third of the day when Conor McDowell put him through with a fine through ball which Reid got to just before the 18th keeper and with a cool lob he made it 3-0. Substitute Sean O'Reilly then had a couple of glorious chances to add to the Stars tally but a mixture of poor finishing and some poor touches he failed to do so. The final goal of the game once again had quality written all over it after Reid & Brown worked a clever free kick which set Reid free down the touchline and with a pin point cross he found Nellis at the back post who's bullet like header flew into the top corner.
Next week the Star are away Bangor Swifts and if the Star win that game and Ballywalter fail to win against Mossley the Star will be champions as Ballywalter will not be able to claw back the 16 point gap the Star will have created.
Before that the Star will face Nortel on Tuesday night in the 4th round of the Clarence cup, with a 7:30pm kick off. |

CRUMLIN STAR II 1 - 2 NEWINGTON II Crumlin Star took on Newington 2nds at Mallusk in Walter Moore Cup Quarter Final. Crumlin Star faced the unbeaten Newington and it was the Antrim Road team who started the better. Thomas Duffy was winning the aerial battles in midfield against the strong Ciaran Gormley. The Star defence of Reilly, Berne, Finnegan and Taylor were in control and limiting the Newington forwards to long range shots. James doyle and Mark Mooney were proving a handful for the Newington defence and running at them with every opportunity. The first chance in the game came after 30mins when a Duffy flick from a header found Anto Moore who hit his shot straight at the Star keeper Mal Thomspon. Ciaran Gormley brought the best out of the Newington keeper after 40mins as he saw his long ranged shot from 30 yards just tipped over the bar. The Star almost took the lead on 41mins when Stiofan Browns pace on the wing beat the Newington's Black and his low cross was narrowly missed by the sliding Mark Mooney. On 45 mins Newington took the lead when Anto Moore got a cheap freekick and he delivered a precision cross that found Taylor Smith whos glancing header powered past Thompson in goals to put the Ton 1 up. H/T 0-1 After some sterns words of encouragement from the Star management of Toner and Hamilton the Star team were ready for the 2nd half. The Ardoyne team were the better to start the half with Doyle and Mooney almost scoring for the Star only the Newington keeper was equal to there shots. Thomas duffy almost doubled the Tons lead on 55mins when his long ranged shot was tipped over the bar by Thompson. The Ardoyne team made two changes bringing on Todd for Osborne and Braniff for Brown . The Star got their equaliser on 60mins when Tony Reilly and Ciaran Braniff combined with a great one two and Reilly struck the ball low an hard into the corner of the net giving the Ton keeper no chance . The Crumlin Star were well on top and pushing for the winner with Star midfielder Mc Connell finding his way with some great passes. On 65 mins the Ton were reduced to ten men when the referee showed the Ton winger a red card for an of the ball clash. Newington were rattled as the Star were pushing them well into there own half and the ton keeper was being kept busy with shots from Todd and Braniff being pushed wide for corners. The game was heading for extra time when Newington broke with pace and forced a corner. Berne cleared from corner and Black had struck a super shot only to be blocked by Tony Reilly but the block fell to Rocky Meaney who unleashed an unstoppable shot into the top corner to break the Star's hearts .The Star pushed all the way but Newington held on to progess to the Semi final. Final Score 1-2 Star Team: Thompson . Reilly . Finnegan .Berne . Taylor .Osborne Mc Connell .C Gormley .Brown .Doyle .Mooney. Todd . Braniff .Cairns Starman: Doyle |
