Newington Rangers 1-1 Crumlin Star
With the league title already in the bag the Star travelled to Larne on Saturday with a somewhat under strength side. First team regulars Ciaran Reid, Sean & Paul Brown were all on the bench with Ciaran Burns & Seamy Nellis both rested due to injuries. The Star star started of very strongly with some excellent football and should've taken an early lead on several occasions but Gormley & Hawkins were denied by the home sides keeper. Against the run of play Newington took the lead when a long punt from their keeper fell lovely for their striker who brilliantly lobbed Thompson from 25 yards. The home side were reduced to ten men after a horror tackle on O'Reilly midway through the half which gave the Star the initiative for the remainder of the game.
H/T 1-0
The second half was entirely played out in the Newington half as the Star pegged the home team back inside their area. With ten men behind the ball the Star struggled to create many clear cut chances but as the ten men tired towards the end of the game the equaliser was always on the cards. With time running out Sean Brown crossed in an in swinging corner which was met perfectly by Joe McAlea whos powerful header flew into the top corner to salvage a point for the champions. Joe McAlea levelled the match! |

Orangefield 2-3 Crumlin Star
The Star are through to the quarter finals of the Clarence cup after a tough encounter with Orangefield Old Boys over in East Belfast. The Star took an early lead when a long ball from Thompson wasn't dealt with by the home sides defence, where Gormley was on hand to barge his way through two tackles and fire the ball home to make it 1-0 to the Star. After going in front the Star took their foot of the gas and were second to the ball all over the park and the home team got a deserved equaliser in the 20th minute when their midfielder let fly from twenty yards out to bring the sides level. Orangefield where well on top at this point and were creating chances at will and went deservedly in front after a quick counter attack broke the Stars offside trap for their striker to run through on goal and chip the helpless Thompson and make it 2-1. Things could've got worse for the Star before the break as their lacklustre display was giving the home side countless opportunities to stretch their lead but luckily for the Star they failed to take their chances.
H/T 2-1 To put it nicely manager Eamonn Hawkins gave his players a stern talking to during the interval which seemed to work wonders as from the very beginning of the second half the Star nearly equalised when Paul Brown forced the home keeper into a fine save. For the opening twenty minutes of the second half the Star pegged Orangefield back in their final quarter and put the home side under some severe pressure. Anto Braniff should've equalised on the hour when he found himself free from a Sean Brown corner but his header went well over the bar when he should've done better. But the Ardoyne sides persistence finally paid of soon after when Gormley broke free to lift the ball over the stranded keeper to score his second of the day and put the Star on level terms. After this the game ebbed and flowed as both sides pushed for a winner but it was the Star who always looked like getting it as they created the better chances. Mark Mooney replaced captain Sean Brown with 15 minutes to go and with his desire to win every ball plus his pace out on the wing he gave the Star just what they needed to push for a winner. The winning goal came with five minutes to go when Mooney found Gormley in the box and as Gormley shielded the ball, his marker got too close and hauled him to the floor for a certain penalty. Gormley then dusted himself down and stepped up to send the keeper the wrong way and put the Star into the next round of the cup.
It was Gormley 12th hat trick in what has been an unbelievable season for the young striker.
The Star now face Shankill United away on Wednesday week in the last eight at 7pm but before that they'll face Newington Rangers in the penultimate fixture of the league down in Larne. Joe Gormley: 12 Hat tricks this season! |
