Crumlin Star 9-1 Queens II The Star finished of the year in style with a comprehensive victory over Queens on Saturday. Goals from Mark Mooney (3) Paul Brown (3) and a goal a piece for Sean Brown, Ciaran Reid and Sass McConnall gave the Star the emphatic victory. It was literally a game of two half's as the Star failed to convert most of the chances they created in the firstforty five minutes. Mark Mooney did open the scoring in the 15 th minute when the Star broke quickly from a Queens corner and within 10 seconds the ball was in the visitors net as Mooney fired home from a Paul Brown cross. The rest of the half was morefrustrating than anything for the Ardoyne side as chances went begging and final balls where over hit or way of the mark. Anto Braniff came closest to adding to the Star's tally but his effort from just inside the box crashed of the underside of the bar and onto the line which was gathered up by thegreat-full Queens keeper.
H/T 1-0
After a stern talking to from manager Hawkins at half time the Star came out determined to put things right and straight from the kick off Dam Whelan crashed a header of the Queens post from a Reid cross. Soon enough it was 2-0 as Mark Mooney got his second of the day when he headed home a Brendy Hamilton cross. Paul Brown made it 3-0 not long after when he also headed in a Ciaran Reid corner. Queens where a beaten side at this point as the game was literally being played in their final quarter as the Star probed for openings and shots on goal. Brown got his second of the day on the hour when he rounded the Queens keeper to slot the ball home to make it 4-0. Nellis, O'Reilly & McConnall where all brought on to freshen things up and McConnall got on the scoring act straight away when Sean Brown unselfishly squared the ball to him to slot the ball home to make it 5-0 to the Star. Number 6 came from the penalty spot when Ciaran Reid was chopped down in the box and the reliable Sean Brown fired the ball past the dumb founded Queens number one. Mooney finally got his hat trick when put through by O'Reilly and the little forward made no mistake with his finish. Ciaran Reid got a deserved goal after a tireless display in the middle of the park when he cut inside from the left and drilled the ball past the on coming Queens keeper. Not to be out done Paul Brown also got a hat-trick as Mooney turned provider when he rounded the keeper to cross the ball to his strike partner who cheekily back heeled the ball over the line to make it 9-0. In injury time Queens where awarded a penalty when McAlea was judged to have handled the ball inside the area which their striker converted for the final goal of the day.

Woodvale 0-1 Crumlin StarThe Star made it into the quarter finals of the Cochrane & Corry cup after a hard fought victory over neighbours Woodvale on Saturday. Its Woodvale's first season in the NAFL and already they're showing their potential as they're top of division 2C after winning every game but this was going to be their toughest challenge yet as the Star where the only team in the country with a 100% record in all competitions. Woodvale came closest to opening the scoring from the first corner of the game but Thompson in goal pulled of a brilliant save to tip the ball over the bar. Next it was the Star's turn to go for goal as Gormley struck a sweet volley from outside the box but the Woodvale number one pushed the ball round the post for a Star corner. The game was evenly poised at this stage as both sides showed a lot of hunger and determination not to let the big support for both side's down. As the half came to an end the Star had two glorious chances to take the lead but both headers from Mooney & P.Brown went agonisingly wide. Woodvale also had an opportunity to go in front just before the interval but their big striker fluffed his chance after Burns's attempted clearance rebounded of Nellis and into his path. H/T 0-0 The second half was the same as the first with both side's battling hard and fighting for every ball. If Woodvale where going to score in this game it was either going to be from a long throw into the Star's box or from a free kick as they where awarded at least six of them in really dangerous positions but Thompson in goal was in fine form for the Star as he dealt with everything the home side could muster. Just after the hour the Star broke the dead lock when Gormley cut in from the left and fired a shot on goal but the striking instinct from Paul Brown seen him stick out his right boot and steer the ball into the bottom corner to give the Star a deserved lead. The goal seemed to lift the Star as they created some goal scoring chances straight after this but Mooney, Braniff and S.Brown all wasted their glorious chances. As the game came to an end Woodvale pushed hard for the elusive equaliser but the Star's back four where outstanding again as the kept the home side at bay as the Ardoyne side marched on to the quarter finals where the face Kilroot Rec on the 16th January. Next week the Star are at home to Queens II in a league fixture. Kick off 2:00pm. Team: Thompson, McAlea, Hamilton, Nellis, Burns, S.Brown, Reid, Braniff, Mooney, P.Brown, Gormley Subs: O'Reilly, Keenan, Cairns Starmen -Thompson & Mooney Pictured below is Mal Thompson & Mark Mooney |
