Balinamallard Utd Res 0-2 Crumlin Star

The Star ended their Fermanagh jinx when they beat a very good Balinamallard outfit on Saturday. The Star had crashed out of the Junior cup on three separate occasions to a Fermanagh & Western league side in the past four seasons so the pressure was on even before a ball had been kicked. With the sun shinning brightly and the pitch in immaculate condition all theingredients was there for an entertaining game of football. The home side started the brighter as they put the Star under some early pressure but theback line of Hamilton, Keenan, Burns & McAlea where all on top of their game as they snuffed out any danger that the home side could muster. Midway through the half the Star started to move it up a few gears as Braniff & Reid began to dominate the central midfield with Mooney and Sean Brown like wise on the wings. The first real attempt on goal came from captain Sean Brown when he tested the home side's keeper from just outside the box but their number one was more than equal to it. Soon after it was Gormley's turn to test the big keeper from long range but again found the Balinmallard keeper in fine form. Soon enough the Star's relentless pressure was finally rewarded when Paul Brown's shot was only half cleared to his brother Sean who squared the ball to Joe Gormley who then put the Star 1-0 up with an easy tap in at the back post. The Star finish the half well on top as they where first to every ball and won every 50/50 challenges as they where determined not to let themselves down in Fermanagh again.
H/T 0-1
The second period began with the Ardonians well on top again as Reid and Braniff where controlling the game from the middle of the park and Gormley and Brown giving the home side's defence a torrid time. Gormley went close again in the 50th minute but was denied again by the Balinmallard keeper. As the game wore on the home side pushed for an equaliser but again found the Star's defence in excellent form as they where restricted to long range efforts. With the home side pushing for that elusive equaliser they where leaving themselves exposed at the back and Brown, Gormley and Mooney all had chances to get that killer second goal but where denied yet again. In the 80th minute Sean Brown swung an excellent corner into the box where it was met by the oncoming Braniff who powered his header home to give the Star a two goal cushion. This was the final nail in the home side's coffin as they offered very little after this so it was the Star who marched on into the 3rd round of the Junior cup.
Next week the Star are at home to Belfast & District side St Pauls in the Junior Shield, kick off 1:30pm.

Team: Thompson, Hamilton, McAlea, Keenan, Burns, S.Brown, Reid, Braniff, Mooney, Gormley, P.Brown

                                           Kilkeel 0-5 Crumlin Star

The Star eased through to the next round of the County Antrim Junior Shield when they demolished a Kilkeel side that that never really liked like troubling the Star at any stage during the game. Goals from Ciaran Reid, Sean Brown, Paul Brown and a Joe Gormley brace sent the Ardoyne side through to the second round where they'll meet West Belfast outfit St Pauls at Mallusk playing fields. The opening stages of the game was a bit of a scrappy affair with both sides giving the ball away carelessly and not much football being played. The only time the home side really troubled the Star was with long balls into the box but central defenders Keenan & Burns where more than a match for them. Joe Gormley had the Stars first real effort on goal as he let fly from 25 yards out only to be denied by a brilliant save from Kilkeel's keeper. From the resulting corner the home side's defense fell asleep and let Ciaran Reid & Mark Mooney work a short corner with Reid cutting in and driving his shot underneath the keeper to put the Star ahead in the 10th minute. Joe Gormley kept his fine goal scoring run going when Mark Mooney beat two defenders out on the wing and put the ball on a plate for the younghit man as he calmly side footed the ball in of the post to make it 2-0 to the Star. Captain Sean Brown made it 3-0 on the stroke of half time when the ball fell to big Micky Keenan in the box whoBrazilian like back heeled it to Brown who drove the ball home from 5 yards out.
H/T 0-3
The second half was the same storey as the Ardoyne side dominated all aspects of the game which could've seen them hit double figures only for some slack finishing. Paul Brown marked his return to the side with a fine goal on the hour when he broke the ofside trap and cheekily walk round the stranded keeper and fire the ball home to put the game well beyond the home side. O'Rielly replaced Mooney soon after to give the energetic winger a rest and he wasted two guilt edge chances straight away when it looked easier to score. Joe Gormley rounded of the scoring for the day when he rose highest from a corner to nod in his second of the day. The Star had chances to add to their tally but misses from Brown, O'Reilly and Whelan kept the scoreline the same. Next week the Star are away to County Fermanagh to face Balinamallard United Reserves in the second round of the Junior Cup. Anyone supporters wishing to with the team on the coach will have to meet at the Star at 10:15am and it will cost £5.

CRUMLIN STAR II 4 - 0 ABBEY VILLA

Star II's maintained their good form with a convincing win against a previously unbeaten Abbey Villa side. Star made a few changes with (S) Murray and Quail coming back into the starting line up to replace the unavailable Mc Mullan and O'Halloran. Star started the match strongly and were ahead in the 5th minute when Doyle broke free and blasted the ball into the roof of the net from 12 yards. Moments later Star were 2 goals up when Cairns was clear on goal only to be brought down and Star were awarded a penalty. Mc Nally stepped up however his penalty was saved but he got to the loose ball to finished well into the bottom corner. Star's defence of (S) Murray, Collins, Hawkins and O'Neill were playing very well and Abbey Villa were finding it tough to create any chances. Star were playing some good football and should have been 3 up when (S) Murray cross was headed over by Quail who should have done better. Abbey Villa gradually came into the game as Star switched off and were under pressure as the half drew to a close. H/T 2-0

Star's front duo of Toner and Doyle were working hard and creating problems with the midfield of Cairns, Gormley, Mc Nally and Quail were passing the ball well and supporting them. Mc Coey replaced Quail and moments later a Mc Coey pass found Mc Nally and he squared for Cairns who drilled his shot past the keeper to put Star 3 goals up. Murphy then replaced Toner with (D) Murray replacing Gormley. Micky Hawkins saw his 35 yard shot crash against the bar as Star pressed for a fourth goal. Star got a fourth when Mc Nally hit a brilliant 25 yard shot into the top corner. Star's management were delighted with the win. F/T 4-0
