                             Crumlin Star 3-2 Newington YC

On Thursday night the Star entertained Newington at Solitude for a friendly game due to both sides not having any league games. The Star dominated the early proceedings with Joe McNeil running the show down the left flank and it was McNeil who created the first goal after a terrific run down the left seen him pull a perfect ball back to Stephen Brown for the simplest of tap ins. Newington nearly equalised minutes later only for a fine save from youngster McNeill in goal when he pushed a goal bound shot from Smith round the post. The Star then doubled their advantage when nice interplay from the strike pairing of Paul & Sean Brown left Paul McLarnon with an open net for him to drill the ball past the helpless defender on the line. The Star then found themselves in dreamland minutes later when Sean Brown let loose from just inside the Newington half as his outrageous effort dipped under the crossbar giving Smith in nets no chance to make it 3-0 to the Star. Just before the break Newington scored a wonder goal of their own when their striker volleyed all from 30 yards out which flew into the top corner. The second half failed to live up to the standards of the first as a solitary goal was all that both sides could muster up. The goal came from the penalty spot after Brown was penalised for hand ball. Trainor stepped up to send the keeper the wrong way to make it 3-2.
On Saturday the Star are at home to Donard Hospitals in a league fixture.
Saucy Brown rolled back the years with a stunning strike from all of 40 yards

Albert Foundry 1-1 Crumlin Star  (Star win 4-2 on Pens)

The Star are through to the quarter finals of the Border Cup after a hard fought win over Premier side Albert Foundry. The opening stages was a cagey affair with both sides cancelling each other out as clear cut chances where far and few between. On a rain soaked pitch tackles where coming in from every direction but the game was always played in a hard but fair manner. The home side went close to opening the scoring in the 15th minute but their left wingers shot went agonisingly wide of the post. As the game went on the Star began to gain more confidence as the front pairing of O'Neill and Murphy gave the Foundry defence all sorts of problems. Barry McKervy had the Stars best chance of the half when he burst clear on goal but his shot went well wide of the post. Murphy also had a great chance to give the Star the lead but his tame effort was well saved by the Foundry number one.

H/T 0-0

The Star began the second half on the front foot with McNeill and Mooney giving the team lots of energy on the break with Nial Hawkins battling hard in a holding role in midfield. After just five minutes into the restart the Star took the lead when McKervy found Ciaran Murphy at the back post for the little striker to head in one of the easiest goals he'll ever score. Ciaran deserves a lot of credit for his performance as he had to endure one of the most turbulent weeks of his life after his father had a freak accident on holiday and is still seriously ill in Spain. On the hour Foundry got a deserved equaliser when their big number six rose highest at the edge of the box and sent a cracking header in to the top corner. The game then ebbed and flowed as both sides went in search for a winner and it was Murphy who had the best chance when McKervy broke clear down the left and squared the ball to him but with only the keeper to beat he blasted the ball straight at him. The game went in to extra time where Foundry looked the stronger as they forced the Star back into their final third but the Stars defence held firm with McDowell in particular having a fine game at right-back. So the game went into the dreaded penalties where the Stars record was abysmal to say the least as they hadn't won any in the last ten years. McKervy, Murphy and Burns all scored then Thompson made a fine save to make it 3-2 to the Ardoyne men with one penalty left each, so up stepped big PJ O'Neill to send the keeper the wrong way and book the Star a place in the quarter finals where they'll meet Kilroot Rec at Solitude on the 5th November.

Next week the Star are away to Newcastle in a league fixture, kick off 2:pm.

                                   Lisburn Rangers 0-5 Crumlin Star

For the second time in two weeks the Star played Lisburn Rangers and for the second time the Ardoyne side ran out 5-0 winners. The Star got of to the worst possible start when McLarnon was shown a straight red after just 15 minutes after he squared up to a Rangers defender only for the defender to throw himself to the ground and con the referee into thinking he was assaulted. This only seemed to motivate the rest of the team as the other nine outfield players worked tirelessly to compensate for the one player short they had. Ciaran Murphy had to play the lone striker with Fra Murphy just behind him and the duo clicked on several occasions only to be denied by last ditch blocks on the line. The ten men went deservedly in to the lead on 25 minutes when Ciaran Murphy's cross found his name sake at the back post for Fra Murphy to fire the Star into the lead. Minutes later the Star shuldve been awarded a penalty when Berne was hacked down inside the area but bad positional play from the referee meant he didn't have the best of views of the incident and waved play on.

H/T 0-1

A near perfect second half performance seen the Star totally outplay their counterparts with some crisp passing and eye catching interplay which resulted in another four goals for the away side. Paul Berne scored his third goal of the season when he bundled the ball home at the back post in the 50th minute. Shortly after Francie Murphy made it 3-0 when a defence splitting through ball from Philip Savage put him through on goal for the silky striker to volley an unstoppable shot into the top corner. Midway through the half PJ O'Neill replaced the impressive McKervey and with almost his first touch of the ball he headed the Star into a 4-0 lead after the home sides keeper was caught in no mans land. At this point the home sides heads well and truly down as Star began to create chances at will with the majority of them falling to Ciaran Murphy but unfortunately the nimble striker left his shooting boots at home as he missed a host of goal scoring chances. The final goal of the game came a few minutes from time when Sean O'Reilly was put through on goal and brilliantly sent the keeper the wrong way to make it 5-0 to the Star. Just before the referee blew for the final whistle PJ O'Neill almost made it 6-0 with a fine effort from 25 yards but with the keeper well beaten the ball agonisingly crashed of the crossbar.

Team: Thompson (6) McDowell (7) Berne (8) Burns (7) Savage (8) Mooney (7) McLarnon (5) McNeill (8) McKervey (8) F.Murphy (9) C.Murphy (7)

Subs: O'Neill (7) O'Reilly (7) Hawkins (7)

Next week the Star make the short trip over to the West circular road to face Albert Foundry in the Border Cup, Kick Off 2:00pm.
