Fivemiletown United 2-6 Crumlin Star On Saturday the Star travelled to Fivemiletown for a first round Intermediate cup fixture. In previous years Tyrone hasn't been a happy hunting ground for the Ardoyne men but on Saturday the Star where just too good for the Mid Ulster Intermediate A league side. In rain soaked conditions the Star started the better with Joe McNeill and Francie Murphy pulling the strings in the middle of the park with Sean Brown and Ciaran Murphy causing all sorts of problems up top. After just ten minutes the Star took the lead when Barry McKervey crossed for Sean Brown to score from close range. Shortly after the impressive Joe McNeill drove into the box and fired passed the defenceless keeper to double the Stars lead. All over the park the Star where well on top and soon enough it was 3-0 to the Ardoyne side when Mark Mooney finished well from an acute angle. In a rare attack against the Stars rearguard Fivemiletown pulled a goal back when a ball swung in from a corner somehow went across the face of the goal and was put away by the home sides striker. Any thought of a fight back was short lived when Ciaran Murphy scored just before half time when he finished well after some hard work by Mooney. H/T 1-4 The second half started as the first ended with the Star putting the ball in the homes sides net once again. The goal was all down to the exquisite pass from Francie Murphy to Barry McKervey which sliced Fivemiletown's defence wide open as McKervey side footed the Star into a commanding 5-1 lead. With the wind and rain at their backs the home side managed to put the Star under a spell of pressure which resulted in them winning a penalty when O'Reilly was harshly judged to have tripped his opponent, the same player picked himself up and fired the ball past Thompson to make it 5-2. The final goal of the game came ten minutes from time when Francie Murphy jinked his way into the box and slotted the ball into the net to make it a resounding 6-2 victory for the Star. On Friday the Star are home to Kilroot Rec in the quarter final of the Border Cup, Kick Off 7:30pm @ Solitude. Team: Thompson (7) O'Reilly (8) Burns (8) Berne (7) Savage (7) Mooney (7) McNeill (9) F.Murphy (8) McKervey (7) Brown (9) C.Murphy (8) Subs: O'Neill (6) McDowell (6) P.Brown (6) Joe McNeill scored his first goal for the Star after his return from America. |

Abbey Villa 1-2 Crumlin Star The Star progressed into the third round of the Irish cup after a hard fought victory over Abbey Villa in Milisle. For the second week in a row the Star needed a very late winner as PJ O'Neill's injury time goal sent the Ardoyne men into Wednesdays third round draw. With a very strong wind sweeping across the pitch both sides struggled to play any type of football but with the wind at their backs the Star camped in the Villa half for most of the early proceedings. After O'Neill and Murphy had had gone gone close to opening the scoring the Star finally got the breakthrough they wanted when Paul Brown scored from close range after some great work from McNeill. Towards the end of the half Brown was denied a second goal for offside when he looked clearly on so the Star had to be contempt with the one goal advantage at half time. H/T 0-1 With a gale force wind now in the Star's face's the team new they where going to have a real battle on their hands and the half couldn't have got of to a worse start when Villa equalised right at the beginning of the restart. After a long punt up field from the half way line Thompson was caught in no mans land and with the aid of the wind the ball flew over his head and into the net to bring the sides level. Things began to look ominous for the Star as they got pinned back in their final third for large periods of the second half but Berne and Burns where colossal in the heart of the Stars defence. PJ O'Neill was also having a fine game as his aerial strengths where crucial in giving the Star some rest bite when under pressure for long periods. As the game looked to be going into extra time the Star broke away on a rare attack and after McKervey found a bit of space out on the left flank he sent in a wicked cross into the Villa six yard box where O'Neill was on hand at the back post to tap in the winner and put the Star into the next round. Team: Thompson (7) McDowell (6) Berne (7) Burns (7) Savage (6) F.Murphy (6) S.Brown (7) McNeill (7) McKervey (7) P.Brown (6) O'Neill (8) Subs: Mooney (6) C.Murphy (6) O'Reilly (6) Next week the Star travel to Fivemiletown for a first round Intermediate cup game. Big PJ scored the winner on Saturday |

Donard Hospital 1-2 Crumlin Star
After a well below par performance on Saturday the Star can count themselves lucky that their 100% league record is still intact after Donard Hospitals gave the Ardoyne men a fright. It was a far cry from the previous meeting a few weeks back when the Star ran out convincing 6-0 winners but it wasn't the same story on Saturday. The early exchanges where quite lethargic as both sides lacked any zip in their overall play but out of the blue the Star took the lead when Barry McKervey put Ciaran Murphy through on goal for the little striker to fire the Star into the lead. Some might have thought the Star would've pushed on from here but credit has to go to the home side as they battled for every ball as they where out to impress their new management team.
H/T
After some choice words from manager Hawkins during the break the Star where sent out to up their game all over the park but after a bright opening sloppiness crept back into their play which enabled Donard to grow more and more in confidence. Midway through the second half Nial Hawkins lost possession in the middle of the park and with a quick break away Donard drew level with a fine finish from their striker leaving Thompson in goal with no chance. This sparked a frenzy on the line as the management rang the changes with Fra Murphy, Stephen Brown and Paul Brown replaced Mooney, O'Neill and Ciaran Murphy. The Star then began to impose themselves a lot more on the home side as Brown and McKervey both went close to giving the Star the lead. With time running out the Star beagan a move that started at the back through Burns, after a few passes in midfield McKervey sent in a perfect cross for Stephen Brown to volley home the winner which was very cruel on the home side.
Team: Thompson (6) McDowell (6) Burns (7) Berne (6) Savage (7) Mooney (6) McNeill (6) Hawkins (6) McKervey (7) C.Murphy (7) O'Neill (6) Subs : F.Murphy (6) S.Brown (8) P.Brown (6) Next week the Star travel to Milisle for an Irish Cup game with Abby Villa.
