Lisburn Rangers II 0 - 2 Crumlin Star II

Star II's produced a quality performance on Saturday and emerged victors with a convincing 2-0 win against fellow promotion rivals Lisburn II. Star welcomed back Mc Nally into the side and started the brighter of the two sides with the front three of Scully, Toner and Doyle causing problems for the Lisburn backline early on with their link up play and strength. Star had a few half chances but nothing really threatened the Lisburn goal. Star had their first real chance of the game when (S)Murray cross for Gormley whos superb header was matched by a super save from the Lisburn Goalkeeper. This gave Star a lift and they were now starting to play better football and deservedly went infront when a Gormley corner was met by Hawkins who rose highest to put Star a goal up with a towering header. Star's defence of Mc Mullan, Hawkins and Mallon defending well and Gormley protecting them very well with his tough tackling and Mc Nally's pace and trickery causing Lisburn problems . H/T 0-1

Scully and Hagey urged more of the same from their players at half time and Braniff came on to replace the injured Scully. Braniff was right in the thick of action when he went close from a long range shot. Teer and Murray on the wings were having fine games with their strong running causing Lisburn problems and Teer had a shot just go wide on the hour mark. Braniff had a great chance to double Star's lead but his shot was straight at the keeper and Toner had a goal wrongly ruled out for offside. Star were pushing for that killer second goal but a combination of bad luck and goal line clearances they were denied. Osborne replaced Doyle and Mc Nally sealed the win when he raced clear and cooly slotted a left foot shot past the keeper. F/T 0-2 Star II's Management were delighted with the win.

Another North Belfast derby on the cards!

This seasons Clarence cup has just been drawn and theres a mouth watering quarter final on the cards. If the Star overcome Larne Tec Old Boys at home we're away to 2A bottom side Bangor Amateurs and if we win that we could be away to North Belfast rivals Malachains in the quarters albeit if they beat 2C outfit Holywood Rec. The Star's former manager Artie McAlea is the currant Malachains boss which would add a bit of spice to the occasion. Manager Hawkins said " We just have to take one game at a time and hopefully it will happen"  And after knocking out premier side Newington YC in last years quarter final the Star have nothing to fear!

Crumlin Star II 2 - 3 Abbey Villa II AET

Star II exited the Walter Moore Cup at the first hurdle after being beat after extra time against a good Abbey Villa II side. It was Abbey Villa who started the brighter with Star being under a bit of pressure but not really looking like conceding. However after 15 mins Abbey Villa pressure paid off when their left winger evaded Murray and volleyed past Mc Veigh. It went from bad to worse when only a couple of minutes later Abbey Villa doubled their lead when their tall striker scored a header from a free kick. This seemed to shake a bit of life into Star and Braniff tested the goalkeeper with a long range strike. Star reduced the deficit when Toner glanced a header past the goalkeeper from a corner. Star were playing and passing abit better and making some half chances however Abbey Villa were dangerous with their passing and quick counter attacks. The next goal would go Star's way when Murray crossed for Doyle who scored an excellent header into the top corner. H/T 2-2

The second half was a cagey half with both teams dominating in small spells and pushing for the winning goal. Both sides goalkeepers made good saves and both teams made goal line clearances to keep the sides level and extra time followed. Abbey Villa got what turned out to be the winner when their left winger headed the ball into the bottom corner. Star pushed for an equaliser but it was not to be their day. A battling display from Star after being 2-0 down so early and it now leaves them with just the league to concentrate on. F/T AET 2-3

Team: Mc Veigh, Murray, Mallon, Hawkins, Hagans, Curry, Gormley, Scully, Mc Mullan, Toner, Braniff Subs: Teer, Osborne, Doyle
