18th Newtownabbey OB II 1 - 5 Crumlin Star II Star II got a much needed win on Saturday against 18th Newtownabbey at Monkstown. Star started the match well with Mc Nally shooting just wide from 20 yards. A one two up the right hand side between Mc Connall and (M)Mooney saw the latter get in behind the 18th defence, he squared the ball to Toner who scuffed his shot wide. The Star's defence of Mallon, (B) Mooney, Mc Alea and Hagans had to be alert to 18th's quick counters and Mc Gibben in nets was rarely troubled. Star did take the lead when Mc Nally closed down the goalkeeper and won the ball and he was left with a simple tap in to put Star in front. However within a few minutes 18th were level when there midfielder scored a 30 yard free kick that somehow went past Mc Gibben in goal. Despite this setback Star put pressure on 18th and Mc Kervey curled a superb 25 yard shot that unluckily hit the bar. Juts before half time Star regained the lead when Mc Nally scored a long range half volley into the top corner. H/T 1-2 The second half started again with Star having most of the possession. (M) Mooney and Gormley were winning the midfield battle with Mc Connall and Mc Kervey supplying the front duo from each wing. Mc Nally had a great opportunity to get his hat trick however he shot wide from 6 yards. Hamilton replaced Toner on 60 minutes and it was Hamilton who got Star's third goal when he blasted his shot into the roof of the net after a clever run. Star got another goal when Mc Kervey cooly slotted past the goalkeeper from 14 yards to make it 4-1. Mc Mullan and Doyle replaced Mc Connall and Mc Nally and just before the final whistle Doyle got on the scoresheet when he tapped in Mc Kervey's cross. Crumlin Star II 2-2 Lisburn Rangers II Star II and Lisburn played out a draw at Mallusk in terrible conditions. Mc Nally, Mc Coey, Cairns and Mc Alea came into the side from last week. With the strong wind at their backs Star started the brighter of the two sides however their final ball in the final third was lacking quality and the Lisburn keeper was rarely troubled. Star first chance came from a Mc Nally free kick that he hit disappointly over the bar. Lisburn had a few half chances that went wide but their forwards were kept quiet by Mc Coey, Mallon, Mc Alea and Gormley. Star were forced into an early change when the injured Cairns was replaced by Teer. Teer went straight into the action and hit a shot that just went wide of the post. Star had more chances with Murray shooting wide from 20 yards and Mc Coey having 2 long range efforts saved by the keeper. With half time approaching, the ball bounced 25 yards from goal and Mc Nally sweetly stuck a half volley into the top corner to give Star the advantage. H/T 1-0 Playing into the strong wind and with the weather getting worse, Star faced a difficult challenge in the second half. Mc Veigh made a fanastic save on 55 minutes to keep Star in the lead. Toner and Doyle up front battled well to give the Star defence some rest with Hagans protecting the back four very well. Lisburn with the aid of the strong wind had Star under pressure however the some good defending and goalkeeping kept Star in the lead. Scully brought on Mc Mullan for Murray to freshen up his side however Lisburn equalised from a corner after some slppoy defending. Hawkins then replaced Hagans and with 15 minutes to go Teer squared for Mc Mullan to tap in to put Star 2-1 up. Lisburn pushed for an equaliser and with the very last kick of the game they got it when their midfielder hit a shot that gave Mc Veigh no chance. F/T 2-2 Starman: Team: Mc Veigh, Mc Coey, Mallon, Mc Alea, Gormley, Murray, Cairns, Hagans, Mc Nally, Toner, Doyle Subs: Mc Mullan, Hawkins, Teer Jamesy: Scored against Lisburn again this season Jimmy: Got Star's second goal |

Crumlin Star 5-1 Castle UnitedCrumlin Star made into the semi finals of the Cochrane & Corry cup with a comprehensive win over Castle United. In atrocious conditions the Star faced a gale force wind and thunderous showers but still managed to dominated their counterparts. As early as the 3rd minute Ciaran Reid kept his fine scoring run going when he burst into the Castle box and fired his shot between the keepers legs to give the Star an emphatic start to the game. The gulf between the two sides was clearly visible as there was 36 places between the two sides in the Amateur league with the Star playing the ball about with confidence and looking dangerous with every attack. Barry McKervey made his first star after an ankle injury and got back to his scoring ways when he cut in from the right wing and let fly from the edge of the area to double the Star's lead. Chris Devenny got his name on the score sheet for the second week running when he rose highest from a McKervey corner to nod the ball home past the Castle keeper and Anto Braniff put the game well beyond Castle's reach when he ran on to a Devenny knock down and poked the ball passed the helpless keeper. With the wind getting stronger towards the end of the half the Star struggled to get out of their area and after a poor clearance a Castle player hit one from 25 yards and it flew in of the post to make it 4-1 at the interval. H/T 4-1 With a strong gale behind them the Star literally camped inside the Castle final third but found the away keeper in fine form as he pulled of a series of outstanding saves. First he denied Sean Brown when he tipped his long range effort over the bar then he saved efforts from Paul Brown and Sean O'Reilly when they looked certain to score. Paul Brown did make it 5-1 on the hour mark when rounded the keeper and slotted the ball home after a defencive mix-up. With the weather getting worse and the game well and truly over the ref asked both teams did they want to continue so both sides agreed it was pointless playing on and where delighted to get an early shower. The Star are now through to the semi finals where they'll be joined by Albion Star and 18th Newtonabby Old Boys, with Derriaghy and Immaculata still to fight out for the remaining semi final place. Next week the Star are away to Bangor Amateurs in the Clarence cup with a 1:30 kick off. Team: Thompson, O'Reilly, Keenan, Burns, Nellis, Reid, S.Brown, Braniff, McKervey, Devenny, P.Brown Subs: McConnall, M.Mooney, B.Mooney |
