Bangor Amateurs 0-3 Crumlin StarThe Star got back to winning ways on Saturday with a 3-0 win over Bangor Amateurs in the Clarence cup. Goals from Ciaran Reid, Paul Brown and Sean O'Reilly sent the Star into the next round where they'll meet North Belfast rivals Malachains in the next round. The Star got of to a flyer putting the sea-siders under some real pressure as McKervey and Brown forced the home keeper into two fine saves. Paul Brown then missed a succession of chances to put the Star ahead but he was having a rare off day as he squandered three great goal scoring chances. It was left up to midfield duo Braniff and Reid to finally break the dead lock when Braniff broke from midfield to slip a defence splitting ball into Ciaran Reid's path for the wee midfielder slot the ball past the helpless keeper. Again chances came and went for the Star as the scoreling somehow stayed the same at half time. H/T 0-1 The second period was more of the same as the Star showed the better quality on the ball as the gulf between the sides was noticeable. The Star where missing Mark Mooney and Chris Devenny in their attack but still looked dangerous on every attack and on the hour mark Paul Brown finally got his goal when he reacted first to a lose ball after the goalkeeper could only parry a Sass McConnall shot. In fairness Bangor never gave up and put the Star under some pressure towards the end of the game but Thompson in goal was more of a match for them. Late on the star hit Bangor with a quick counter-attack which resulted in Sean O'Reilly firing in the Star's third goal of the day as the Star marched into the next round of the competition. The Crumlin Star football committee would like send out a get well soon message to defender Brendan Mooney who unfortunately broke his leg in last weeks Junior cup game in Newry. Team: Thompson, O'Reilly, McAlea, Burns, Nellis, McConnall, McNally, Reid, Braniff, P.Brown, McKervey Subs: Cairns, Keenan, McCoey Sean O'Reilly scored the 3rd goal on Saturday .jpg) |

Crumlin Star 3-0 Newington RangersThe Star moved 8 points clear at the top of division 2A with an excellent win over second place side Newington Rangers. Again Mallusk was battered by a gale force wind but it never bothered the Ardoyne men as they kept the ball on the deck and took the game to their opponents. The first chance of the game fell to Mark Mooney but he seen his effort well saved by the apposing keeper. Joe McAlea was making his first team debut at left back and he fitted in brilliantly with his tough tackling and assured passing. Star broke the dead lock in the 17th minute Paul Brown broke down the left flank and found his strike partner Devenny to nod the ball home from 5 yards. With the strong wind behind them Newington never really troubled the Star as Brendan Mooney and Micky Keenan marshaled the defence excellently with Ciaran Burns commanding the right back area also. The remainder of the half was played in the Newington final third but the Star failed to convert any of the half chances they created. H/T 1-0 With a strong wind behind them in the second half the Star dominated the whole of the half as the Newington boys couldn't handle the league leaders. As usual Paul Brown got on the scoring act when he rose highest from a Ciaran Reid cross to loop his header over the stranded keeper to double the Star's advantage. At this stage of the game Sean Brown and Anto Braniff where dominating the midfield battle as the set up wave after wave of attacks. With a mixture of bad finishing and heroic defending the scoreline somehow stayed the same until Mark Mooney finally put the game to bed when he scored the third header of the day in the 81st minute. Next week the star play Bessbrook United in the last 16 of the Junior Cup at Mallusk kick off 1:30pm. Team: Thompson, Burns, B.Mooney, Keenan, McAlea, Reid, S.Brown, Braniff, M.Mooney, P.Brown, Devenny Subs: O'Reilly, McKervey, McConnall Mark Mooney scored the star's third goal on Saturday |
