Crumlin Star II 4-1 Iveagh II
Crumlin Star second string travelled to twinbrook on saturday to face Iveagh hoping to bounce back from the previous week defeat away to Ards. Star started the better of the two teams with Mooney and McKervey pulling the strings in midield with Cairns and Murphy working well down either wings. The Star defence was marshalled well by Hawkins, Hamilton, McCoey and McAuley while veteran Doran and Teer were creating chances up front. The opening goal came from Thompson in goal whose long ball caught out the Iveagh defence and Teer calmly slotted the ball home. Iveagh tried to push hard to get an equaliser but the star defence were on top form, and the star then doubled their lead when Cairns was released down the left and his ball into the box was deliberatley handled and the resulting penalty was rattled into the net by veteran Hamilton. Star continued to pass and play the ball well with Murphy and Mooney linking up well creating a chance for Doran but his shot was just wide of the goal. Hawkins also had a chance from a corner but his shot was tipped wide by the Iveagh keeper. H/T 2-0 The second half started much as the first finished with Star on top throughout and they continued to push Iveagh all they way but their keeper was on top form. Osbourne was introduced for Teer and he was straight into the thick of the action when he blasted a shot just wide. However he did get a goal when he met Cairns' corner and his header left the Iveagh keeper with no chance. Iveagh then continued to push the star defence but to no avail until a long free kick which looked to be going wide rebounded off the post and the Iveagh striker tap the ball home. The Murray brothers were then introduced for McCoey and Murphy and it was Murray (s) pass who found Mooney and he was uphended in the area for another penalty and again veteran Hamilton slotted the ball home. Mckervey and Mooney continued to battle it out in the midfield area while Hawkins and McAuley kept Iveagh at bay until the final whistle. Star manager Scullion was very pleased with his sides performance and character after the previous week result. Next up for Star is top of the league clash away to Lisburn Rangers. ST LUKES 1 - 5 CRUMLIN STAR
Crumlin Star travelled to Twinbrook on Saturday to play Belfast & District premier league side St Lukes in the last 32 of the Junior cup. Star ran out convincing winners 5-1 with goals from Devenny, Barry McKervey (2) and two wonder strikes from Anto Braniff put the Star through to the last 16. The Star started of like a house on fire and were 1-0 up with in the first few minutes when a great cross from Ciaran Reid found Devenny and the big striker made no mistake with the finish to give the Star the lead. Soon after it was 2-0, the ball broke to Braniff out on the wing and he found McKervey with a pin point cross and the inform midfielder found the back of the net with a sweet left foot strike. St Lukes were on the ropes at this point but they pull a goal back against the run of play midway through the first half when slack defending from a free kick saw the smallest player on the park get a free header to half the deficit and bring St Lukes back into the game. Star responded well and had chances to go further ahead but misses from Brown and McKervey proved not to be too costly. It was the 27th of October when Anto Braniff last scored for the Star and the big midfielder made the wait worth while with a contender for goal of the season, Paul Brown found space out wide and he squared the ball to Braniff who let fly with a 30 yard volley into the top corner to give the star a 3-1 lead going into half time. H/T 1-3 The second half was again dominated by the Star as they created the better chances and had most of the possession, and it wasn't long before the game was finally killed of from another wonder strike from Anto Braniff. This time the Star captain struck another 30 yard volley with his left foot into the corner of the net leaving the St Lukes keeper with no chance. Whenever St Lukes did try to attack the Stars defence was more than a match, with Brendan Mooney in particular having a fine game at centre back. Barry McKervey made it 5-1 near the end with a delight-full chip to give the Star an emphatic win up in Twinbrook. Next week the Star entertain Tummery Athletic in the last 16 of the Junior cup at Mallusk, K.O 1:30 pm. TEAM: O'Dwyre (6) O'Reilly (5) Keenan (6) Mooney (7) Nellis (6) Clarke (6) Reid (7) Braniff (9) McKervey (8) Brown (6) Devenny (7) Subs: McConnall (5) Murphy (5) Whelan (5) |

CRUMLIN STAR 4 - 2 A.W.M.C Crumlin Star won the battle of Ardoyne at the Junior stadium on Saturday. A great second half comeback seen the Star come from 2-1 down to win the match 4-2 and be crowned the best team in Ardoyne. Both teams started nervously with missed placed passes and bad defending making it a dull encounter and it was bad defending that gifted Ardoyne their first goal, Braniff failed to clear the ball properly and after a ping pong session in the box the ball fell to Thomas Neeson and the Ardoyne striker buried it with ease to send the League into raptures. The Star responded well as Braniff and Reid began to win more of the ball in the middle of the park and it wasn't long before the Star equalised. The ball broke to Braniff at the edge of the area and he found O'Reilly out wide, his in swinging cross was met by Devenny and his header found the back of the net to level the sides. As half time approached slack defending again from the Star gifted Ardoyne the lead as big PJ O'Neill curled the ball past O'Dwyre in goal from the edge of the area to give Ardoyne the advantage going into half time. H/T 1-2 Star manager Eamonn Hawkins had a few harsh words to say to his players in the changing room and this was to spur his players on as they produced a stunning comeback in the second half. With a lot more bite and determination the Star started to dominate the second half as their superior fitness began to tell. On the hour Star got the equaliser they deserved as Brendan Mailey upended Sean O'Reilly for a definite penalty and Barry McKervey made no mistake with the spot kick as he drilled the ball past Gibson in goal to level the sides once again. The Star then took the lead for the first time in the game in the 70th minute when Eamon Clarke turned Baker in the area and slotted the ball home to send the star supporters wild. Ardoyne manager made a few changes to try and rescue the game but the Stars defence held firm as they limited the League to a couple of half chances. The game was made safe in the last minute when Ciaran Reid played a neat one-two with Paul Brown and the dynamic midfielder struck a 25 yard thunderbolt into the roof of the net and send Crumlin Star into the next round of the Junior cup. |
