Crumlin Star II 1-0 Orangfield Old Boys II

Crumlin Star seconds took on Orangefield at solitude on Friday night in junior shield. The Ardoyne side had the first oppertunity of the game on ten mins when Stiofan Brown  was found by Dominic Whelan on the wing and from his cross Ciaran Cairns  header just shaved the bar. The East Belfast side started to come into the game shortly after and on 20mins should have took the lead when Mc Connell lost the ball in midfield and from a great piece of play from the Orangefield midfielder and forward as they combined well to set the latter fre on goal but Ciaran McNeill pulled of a great save to deny the East Belfast men. Orangfield were winning most of the battles in midfield as the same to players almost broke the deadlock for Orangefield again but again their striker was denied by the excellent Mc Neill in goal. Midway through the half the Star were unlucky not to take the lead when James Doyle's cross was met by Ciaran Braniff on the volley which brought out a super save by Orangefield keeper. Stiofan Brown and Whelan were giving the Orangemen a hard time on the wings with Browns great run and strike from 30yards was saved again by the keeper. On the stroke of half time the Orangemen were denied again  when a long ball caught the Star's defence square but Ciaran mc Neill was on hand again to stop a certin goal.
 ht 0-0
Towzer's and Joe mc Alea's team talk at halftime inspired the Ardoyne side as from the start of the second half  the Star put the Orangemen under a period of sustained pressure and almost took the lead when Osborne and Mc Connell linked beautifully as they found Brown on the wing when his cross was superbly met by the oncoming Braniff but his effort somehow crashed agonisingly of the post.
On 60 mins the Star borke the deadlock when Jim Hagans found Doyle on the wing whos cross was met by Cairns who unselfishly tapped the ball to carian braniff who drilled the ball pass the keeper to put the star in front. Stiofan Brown was making great runs from defence and almost got a second minutes later after beating three Orangefield players with ease he let fly from 20 yards only to be denied by the keeper. Foster, Mc Guinness and dom Murray came on towards the end of the game to give the Star that little bit of energy that they needed to see the game out as the Star booked their place in the 4th round of the Shield. It just goes to show how strong the club is at the moment as the seconds keep holding their own in one of junior footballs most prestigious prizes.

Stars next game against Dunmurray Rec at mallusk 2pm kick off.
Ciaran McNeill was again in surpurb form on Friday night.

THE STAR CRASH OUT OF THE IRISH CUP!

                                                Immaculata 2-0 Crumlin Star

The Star crashed out of the Irish cup on Saturday to West Belfast rivals Immaculata at Grovsnor Road. The West Belfast side were well worth their win as another dismal performance seen the Star only have one shot on target all game. Last week the Star drew 3-3 at home to Rathfriland Rangers and could thank themselves lucky as the Mid-Ulster side totally out played them for the ninety minutes. Although the Star were missing key players such as McLarnon, Savage, McDowell and Stephen Brown the starting XI was still very strong on paper but out on the field they were outfought and outplayed by the hungrier Immaculata side. The Mac went in front early on after Joe McNeill was judged to have used his arm when he charged down a shot, up stepped Dynes to make it 1-0 albeit a bit fortuitously as his badly hit shot somehow went under the body of Thompson in goal. Throughout the half the Star offered very little upfront and soon found themselves 2-0 down when O'Riordan let fly from just out side the box and the ball flew in to the top corner.

H/T 2-0

A disappointed management team rang the changes at half time as O'Neill, C.Murphy and Ciaran Reid replaced Hawkins, F.Murphy and Paul Brown. It was Ciaran Reid's first game back since he broke his leg in the summer. The changes did improve the teams performance slightly but the Mac where never in any danger of letting their two goal lead slip. Ciaran Murphy had the Star's best chance of the game but he somehow blasted the ball over the bar from a few yards out when it looked easier to score. Thompson kept the scoreline respectable with a stunning save from a Dynes volley which he tipped on to the crossbar.

Next week the Star face Newcastle in the Semi Final of the Border Cup down in Druminess, Kick Off 1:30pm

The only bright point on Saturday was Ciaran Reid's return to first team action.

Crumlin Star II 4-2 Barn United II

The Crumlin Star second team took on Barn utd at Mallusk on Saturday. The Ardoyne side started the better and had the Carrick lads on the back foot right from the kickoff. Dominic Whelan was causing the Barn defence all sorts of problems and it was Whelan and Reilly who combined on the wing to force a corner early on, from O'Neills great corner Ciaran Carins rose at the back post to power his header home toput the star 1-0 up on 20 mins. Again another great cross from Gareth O'Neill found James Doyle whos header somehow stayed out, hitting the underside of bar and bouncing back of the line and then cleared. Whelan and Brown were in terrific form  when when they combined for the move of the match as the star played some great football with over 30 passes  Whelan was found in space by Mc Connell and the inform star man drilled the ball past the helpless keeper to put the star 2-0 to the good. The star had great numerous chances to add to the scoreline but Doyle, Osbourne and Cairns were wastfull infront of goal to put the star further ahead.
H/T 2-0
The Star management of Toner and Joe Mc Alea urged the players to keep doing as they were and reminded the players the game wasn over. On 55 minutes the Carrick side got a lifeline when a Ciaran Mc Neill clearance  was charged down and the ball fell to the Barn front man who tapped the ball into the empty net. The Star then made a few changes with Ciaran Reid making his long awaited comeback after a leg break coming on for Mc Connell with Ciaran Braniff replacing Cairns. The Star seemed well in control but were caught on the break on 65 minutes when again the Barn front man got his second goal of the day when he   outpaced the Star's defence and finished well to equalise for the away side. The Star then got their noses in front again on 75 minutes when Gareth O'Neill  and Domnic  Whelan played a neat one two for Stiofan Brown  to tap home from 6 yards to put the ardoyne team  back in to the lead. Cairan Reid almost made it four when himself and Thomas Mc Guinness combined with Reid's shot being well saved by the Barn keeper. On 82 minutes Ciaran Gormley found Mc Guinness on the wing with a long pass and the unselfish Mc Guiness released Dominic Whelan as the Star winger made no mistake drilling the ball past the barn keeper to make it four .
