Ford 0-3 Crumlin StarThe Star ended the season in style with a comfortable 3-0 victory over West Belfast side Ford in Twinbrooke on Thursday. With a few key players missing such as Devenny, O'Reilly, Nellis, Sean and Paul Brown and also manager Hawkins who was away on holiday to Portugal it was left up to his assistant Sean Brown to take the reigns. Eager to keep their winning streak intact the Star started the brighter and took the lead as early as the 5th minute when Barry McKervy broke clear of the Ford defence and fired the ball past the keeper to give the Star super start. Both sides tried to keep the ball on the deck but it was the Star who looked more dangerous and the most likely to score and that they did when Braniff put McKervy through to round the keeper and slot the ball home to double the Star's lead. Any attack that Ford tried to put together was well snuffed out by the Star's defence with Burns marshaling his troops brilliantly infact for the first time in years the Star have the best defencive record in the Amateur league only conceding 19 goals in 22 games. Just before the break Micky Keenan put the game well beyond the home side when he rose highest from a McKervy free to nod the ball home to make it 3-0. H/T 3-0 The home side started the brighter in the opening stages of the second half and put the Star on the back foot. Thompson in goal was forced into an outstanding one handed save when the ball took a wicked deflection from a free-kick at the edge of the area with the always alert McAlea quickest to the rebound to send the ball out for a corner. Just as the Star started to impose themselves on the game again a torrential rain and hail storm made the game imposable to play so the referee blew the game up with 25 minute still to play as both sides didn't mind seeing there was nothing really to play for. Team: Thompson, McCoey, Keenan, Burns, McAlea, Cairns, Reid, Braniff, McConnall, Mooney, McKervy Subs: McNally, Hamilton The Crumlin Star football committee would like to congratulate Paul Brown on making the Amateur League select side to face a Scottish select team in Edinburgh. After a super season with 44 goals to his name it was great to see him rewarded for his outstanding effort. Paul Brown of to Edinburgh with the NAFL select side. .jpg) |

CHAMPIONS!
Bangor Amateurs 0-8 Crumlin Star The Star made it a league and cup double on Saturday when the destroyed Bangor Amateurs 8-0 to secure the league title. This was one of Star's easier games of the season with Bangor showing why they only have 4 points so far this season as they were no real match for the Champions. Star got off to the perfect start when after 50 seconds of play, Mooney broke with the ball from midfield and outpaced the Bangor backline and then calmly sidefooted home to settle any nerves. A few minutes later and Mooney got his second of the day when he smashed home a volley from the edge of the area. Star were in complete control and got a third on 25 minutes when a well worked free kick between Anto Braniff and S Brown saw the latter find space to square to his younger brother Paul who made no mistake from 3 yards. More chances came Star's way with S Brown and Braniff having some long range shots just go over the bar. Just before half time Mooney got his hat trick when he blasted the ball past the keeper from 10 yards. H/T 4-0The second half was more or less the same as the first half with Star dominating and Bangor offering very little. Countless chances went missed by Star until P Brown got his 44th goal of the season when slotted past the keeper from close range. Hawkins immediately made a few changes with Mooney, Keenan and S Brown being replaced by Mc Connall, Mc Coey and Neillis. Mc Connall was straight into the thick of the action when he rounded the goalkeeper to score from a tight angle. It was soon 7-0 when Devenny beat the offside trap and he also rounded the keeper to score. With minutes left, Reid got Star's eight and final goal when he chipped the ball over the defence and ran clear on goal to cooly score past the keeper. A terrific season for Star with 2 trophies in the cabinet and a 19 game winning streak to secure the league.Team: Thompson, O'Reilly, Keenan, Burns, Mc Alea, Mooney, Braniff, Reid, S Brown, Devenny, P Brown Subs: Mc Connall, Mc Coey, Neillis Celebration time back in the Star |
