Sirocco Works 0-2 Crumlin Star Before Wednesdays big cup final against Islandmagee the Star had to face league leaders Sirocco Works over at Wilgar Park in East Belfast. Sirocco were 16 points ahead of the Star due to them playing six games more so the Star players knew that a defeat would surely put a massive dent in the Star's quest for four back to back titles. After a tight first half hour the Star started to take a hold of the game and just before the break Fra Murphy put the Star in front after some great work from Paul Brown put him through on goal for the silky striker to make it 1-0 to the Star. Sirocco dominated the early stages of the second half but never really created any clear cut chances and when Paul McLarnon made it 2-0 midway through the half the game was as good as over. After a bad clearance from the Sirocco keeper the ball fell to McLarnon who's first time volley flew into the top corner from all of 25 yards. Sirocco where reduced to nine men when their captain hacked down man of the match Mooney once again and another player got his marching orders late on as the home side seemed to lose their cool. Fra Murphy found his scoring touch on against Sirocco |

Crumlin Star 0-0 Ards Rangers (Star win 4-3 on pens)
The Star entertained Premier league leaders Ards Rangers in the first round of the Clarence cup on Saturday. Having beaten Premier sides like Comber Rec and Newington in recent years in the competition the Star knew they could give Ards more than a game. From the first minute the Star where the busier of the two sides but found the Ards rearguard hard to break down. Out of the blue Paul Brown almost broke the dead lock when his fine effort was brilliantly pushed on to the bar by the Ards number one. Next to hit the woodwork was PJ O'Neill when his fine header crashed of the post and went agonisingly wide.
H/T 0-0
The second half was pretty much the same as the Star pressed for that illusive goal but found the Ards defence water tight yet again. Ards almost took the lead against the run of play when the striker let fly from 25 yards out but Thompson managed to tip the ball on to the crossbar. Manager Hawkins made a triple substitution midway through the half to inject more life into the Star attack as extra time looked more and more likely. As time ran out the Star pushed for the winner but Sean Brown, Paul McLarnon and Joe Mc Neill were all denied late on. So the game went into extra time were both teams again created very little which meant the tie would be settled by the dreaded penalties. The first seven penalties were out of the top drawer as Brown, Burns, McNeill and McLarnon put the Star into a 4-3 lead, up stepped the Ards captain to level the scores again but Thompson in goal pulled of a brilliant save to put the Star in the driving seat. Francie Murphy then skied the Stars last penalty which kept the score at 4-3 with Ards still left with one but once again Thompson came to the rescue when he dove to his left and tipped the ball round the post to put the Star into the second round. Mal Thompson was the Stars hero on Saturday |
